10 iPhone 16 Pro Max Features You Didn't Know Existed (But You'll Love)

The iPhone 16 Pro Max hides more than most owners ever find: a Camera Control with its own settings menu, 4K video at 120 frames per second, Audio Mix for cleaning up voices, a charge limit you can set in 5% steps, call recording, and iOS 26 extras like Adaptive Power and Lens Cleaning Hints. Below are all 10, with exact settings paths.

Every feature here was checked against Apple's own spec sheets and support pages, and the phone has received iOS 26 and, since September 2026, iOS 27. Menu names can shift a little between updates, so if a path looks different on your phone, search for the feature name in Settings.

Camera features you probably are not using

1. How do you customize the Camera Control button?

The Camera Control on the right edge is more than a shutter. Apple built it with a tactile switch, a force sensor for a light press and a capacitive sensor for touch, so sliding a finger along it changes zoom, exposure or depth. A light press brings up the adjustment menu.

The useful part lives in Settings > Camera > Camera Control. There you can switch the launch gesture from a single click to a double click (handy if the phone keeps opening the camera in your pocket), choose a third-party camera app, and turn on Lock Focus and Exposure so a light press and hold locks AE/AF. Under Accessibility in the same menu you can change Light-Press Force, Double Light-Press Speed and Double Click Speed.

The iPhone 17 Pro and 18 Pro keep the same button in the same place, so these settings carry over when you upgrade.

2. What does click-and-hold on Camera Control do?

Click and hold the Camera Control while pointing at something and you open Visual Intelligence. Aim it at a restaurant, a plant or a poster and you get information about the object or place, plus actions like adding an event from a flyer to your calendar. In iOS 26 Apple extended Visual Intelligence to what is on your screen, so you can search or ask about anything you are looking at.

It needs Apple Intelligence turned on, and the 16 Pro Max qualifies. Availability depends on language and region.

3. Can the iPhone 16 Pro Max shoot 4K at 120 fps?

Yes. According to Apple's iPhone 16 Pro Max tech specs, the 48MP Fusion camera records 4K Dolby Vision at 100 or 120 fps, which Apple called the highest resolution and frame-rate combination it had shipped on an iPhone. The hidden part comes after you shoot. In the Photos app you can change the playback speed of a 4K120 clip to quarter speed, half speed or a fifth speed that matches a 24 fps cinematic feel.

Those clips are large, so read the USB-C tip below before a long shoot.

4. What is Audio Mix and how do you use it?

The 16 Pro Max has four studio-quality microphones and records Spatial Audio. Audio Mix uses that data to change how voices sit in a video after you have recorded it. Open a video in Photos, tap Edit, then the Audio Mix button. You get Standard, In-Frame (focuses on people visible in the shot), Studio (emphasizes voices) and Cinematic, each with an intensity slider.

It works on video recorded with an iPhone 16 or later, so the 17 Pro and 18 Pro have it too.

5. What are Lens Cleaning Hints?

The three-lens camera bump picks up fingerprints every time you pull the phone from a pocket. iOS 26 added Lens Cleaning Hints, which tells you when the lens looks dirty. Switch it on near the bottom of Settings > Camera.

When the hint pops up, wipe the lens with a soft, lint-free cloth, the same one you use on the display. Our guide on how to clean an iPhone screen safely covers what Apple says you can and cannot use, including alcohol wipes.

Battery and charging features

6. Why does your USB-C cable matter?

The 16 Pro Max's USB-C port supports USB 3 at up to 10Gb/s, but only with a USB 3 cable. The cable in the box handles charging fine. Plug in an older or cheaper cable and you are moving 4K120 footage at USB 2 speed. A USB 3 cable also lets you record 4K120 ProRes and Log video straight to an external drive, which keeps internal storage free for everything else.

7. How do you set a battery charge limit?

Go to Settings > Battery > Charging. iPhone 15 and later models let you pick a limit anywhere from 80% to 100% in 5% steps (Apple explains the options in its Charge Limit support article). If your phone sits on a charger overnight or on a desk all day, 85% or 90% is a sensible middle ground between battery longevity and a full day of use.

Charging works the same through a leather case. Our Lucca snap-on case for iPhone 16 Pro Max works with Qi wireless chargers as is. With detachable wallet styles like the Ravenna, wireless charging works with the inner case only, so slide the wallet off before setting the phone on a pad.

8. What is Adaptive Power in iOS 26?

Adaptive Power uses on-device intelligence to predict when you will need extra battery based on your recent use. On a heavy day it can make small performance adjustments, lower screen brightness slightly, limit background activity and switch on Low Power Mode at 20%. It leaves the camera and games running in Game Mode alone, and it needs about seven days to learn your habits.

On the iPhone 16 Pro Max it is off by default. Turn it on in Settings > Battery > Power Mode, as described in Apple's Adaptive Power guide. On the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max it ships switched on.

Phone call features

9. Can you record phone calls on the iPhone 16 Pro Max?

Yes, since iOS 18.1. During a call, tap the record button in the top-left corner of the call screen. An automated voice tells everyone on the call that it is being recorded, and an indicator stays on screen. When you stop, the recording lands in the Notes app with a transcript, and Apple Intelligence can write a summary. Recording laws differ by state and country, so tell the other person first anyway.

10. How do Call Screening and Hold Assist work?

Two iOS 26 additions to the Phone app save real time. Call Screening builds on Live Voicemail: it gathers information from an unknown caller first, then shows it to you so you can decide whether to answer or ignore the call. Hold Assist waits on hold for you and alerts you when a live agent comes on the line.

Messages got a similar filter: texts from unknown senders go to their own folder and stay silent until you accept them. Both features depend on language and region support.

FAQ

Does the iPhone 16 Pro Max get iOS 27?

Yes. iOS 27 was released on September 14, 2026, and supports the same iPhones as iOS 26, from iPhone 11 onward. The 16 Pro Max gets the standard Apple Intelligence and Siri features, while some of the newest Siri features need the 12GB of memory in the iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air.

Is the 80% charge limit bad for daily use?

No, but it trims your usable capacity by a fifth. If you regularly end the day under 20%, pick 90% or 95% instead.

Can I turn off the Camera Control so it stops opening the camera in my pocket?

You can make it harder to trigger. Set the launch gesture to Double Click in Settings > Camera > Camera Control, and under Display & Brightness keep Require Screen On enabled so a press with the screen off does nothing.

Do these features work with a leather case on?

All of the software features do, and our cases are cut with precise openings for the ports and camera. The one adjustment is charging: wallet-style cases with a removable outer wallet, such as Ravenna and Florence, charge wirelessly with the inner case only.

If your 16 Pro Max is still bare, start with the Capri Snap On if you want to carry a few cards, or the Lucca if you want the thinnest leather case we make for it.
