Every bag here starts as a flat hide and is cut, skived, folded and stitched by hand in our workshop.

The panels are cut so the grain runs the same way across the front and the back, which is why a Venito bag holds its shape instead of sagging to one side after a season. Edges are burnished and painted rather than folded under, and the thread is waxed polyester, which outlasts cotton by years in a strap that carries weight every day.

The right bag has less to do with style than with what your hands are doing while you carry it.

• Crossbody: hands free, weight on one shoulder, sized for a phone, a wallet and keys.
• Tote and shoulder: more volume and open access, easier to reach into while standing.
• Clutch: an evening bag, or a second bag that lives inside a larger one.
• Backpack and briefcase: for a laptop and the weight that comes with it.
• Duffle: weekend luggage that still fits an overhead bin.

These bags are cut from full-grain cowhide, which keeps the outer surface of the hide rather than sanding it away. That layer is the strongest part of the skin and the reason a bag survives a decade of daily use.

It also means the leather is not uniform. Growth marks, insect bites and small scars show, and two bags in the same colour will not match exactly. The surface darkens as you handle it, fastest at the corners and along the strap, so a bag that looks flat and even on day one looks like yours after six months.

The parts that fail first on a cheap bag are the zip and the strap fixing, so that is where the cost goes here. Zips are metal with a leather pull. Strap rings are solid rather than folded sheet, and the anchors are stitched through a doubled layer of leather instead of riveted into a single one.

Linings are suede or a heavy cotton twill, both quiet against a phone screen. Interior pockets are sized for real things: a phone, a passport, a card wallet. Three useful pockets beat nine decorative ones.

Leather asks for very little, and most of the damage we see comes from doing too much rather than too little.

• Wipe dust off with a dry cloth. A water stain is usually fixed by wetting the whole panel evenly and letting it dry flat, away from a radiator.
• Condition twice a year at most, with a colourless cream. Oils sold for boots darken a bag far more than you expect.
• Store it loosely stuffed with paper rather than folded, and out of direct sun.
• A scratch that catches the light will often disappear if you rub it with a clean thumb for a minute.

Will the colour transfer onto clothes? Not after the first week on the vegetable tanned shades. If a new bag marks a light shirt, wipe the surface once with a slightly damp cloth and it stops.

Can it be engraved? On most pieces, yes, set up on the product page.

What happens if a strap breaks? Write to us. Straps are replaceable, and we would rather repair a bag than watch it get thrown away.
