iPad Pro, iPad Air, the standard iPad and the Mini, all on one page. Use the size row above the grid to narrow it down, because iPad naming is unhelpful and two tablets called the same thing can be a centimetre apart.

The screen measurement is the reliable way to tell. If you are not sure which one you have, Settings, then General, then About gives you the model name.

• iPad Mini: 7.9 inch on older models, 8.3 inch since
• iPad: 10.2 inch on the older bodies, 10.9 inch on the newer ones
• iPad Air: 10.5 inch and 10.9 inch, depending on the year
• iPad Pro: 11 inch and 12.9 inch

The 10.9 inch iPad and the 10.9 inch Air are close but not identical, and the camera sits in a different place. Use the model name rather than the measurement alone.

Lecce and Parma are folios. They hold the tablet, cover the screen and fold back into a stand for typing or watching something, with a slot or two for a card inside the cover.

A sleeve is the other approach. The tablet slides in with nothing attached to it, which suits anyone who already uses a keyboard case at a desk and wants protection only in transit.

Both are full-grain cowhide with a soft lining. On a tablet the lining matters more than on a phone, because the screen is larger and spends more time pressed against whatever is in the bag with it.

A folio and a Magic Keyboard do not work together. If you use a keyboard case daily, a sleeve is the better buy: the tablet comes out of the keyboard, goes in the sleeve, and the leather does the job on the journey.

Pencil charging on the magnetic edge is blocked by a cover that wraps that side, so check which edge your model uses before choosing a folio.

Full-grain leather on a tablet takes more handling than on a phone, because the whole cover is touched every time it opens. The spine darkens first and the front corner follows.

A dry cloth for dust, a little leather cream once or twice a year, and no heat. That is the whole routine.

Apple sells four iPads at once, and the differences matter once you are buying a folio.

• Pro: the largest camera module and the pencil strip on the long edge. Two screen sizes, each with its own folio.
• Air: the same shape with a smaller camera, and the model most people end up buying.
• Standard iPad: the value model, and the one most likely to be handled by children.
• Mini: pocketable, read one handed, and cut close to the body.

Generation matters as much as line. Two iPads with the same name and two years between them are often not the same size. Settings, then General, then About gives you the exact model, and our selector uses the same names.
