Most people buy the wallet they grew up with rather than the one that suits what they now carry.

• Cardholder: four to six cards and a folded note. Fits a front pocket without printing through the fabric.
• Bifold: cards, notes and receipts. The familiar shape, and still the most practical if you handle cash.
• Zip wallet: everything closed in, including coins, and the safest choice for a bag with no internal pocket.

If you are unsure, count what is in your current wallet and ignore what you have not used in a month.

Contactless cards can be read at short range, and a shielded wallet blocks that read. Whether it matters depends on what you carry. A shielded pocket is worth having for a work badge, a hotel key or a transit card, mostly because it stops two cards being read at once at a gate.

On the models that have it, the shielding is a layer inside the card panel rather than a coating, so it does not wear off and it does not add stiffness you can feel. Product pages say which wallets include it.

Leather stretches to fit what you put in it during the first few weeks and then stops. That is useful, and it is also why overloading a new wallet is the one mistake that cannot be undone.

A slot cut for one card holds two once the leather has relaxed. Three forces the stitching and leaves the slot gaping when you take them out. If you carry more than eight cards, buy the larger wallet rather than pushing a small one past what it was cut for.

A wallet lives in a pocket and takes more friction per square centimetre than anything else we make, so the construction is different from a bag.

The leather is skived thin at the folds so the wallet closes flat instead of bulging. Edges are sanded, burnished and painted in several passes, because an unfinished edge is where a wallet starts to fray. Stitch spacing is tighter than on a bag, which spreads the load across more thread and keeps a card slot from opening up at the corners.

Initials or a short line can be engraved on most wallets here, set up on the product page before you add to cart. The mark is pressed into the leather rather than printed, so it deepens with the rest of the surface instead of wearing off.

Two practical notes if it is a gift. Engraved pieces cannot be returned, so confirm the spelling twice. And a darker shade is the safer guess for someone whose taste you are not certain of, because tan shows handling far faster.

Will it fit in a front pocket? The cardholders and slim bifolds do. The zip wallets are bag wallets.

Does it hold coins? Only the models with a zip or a popper pocket, which is noted on each product page.

How long does one last? Longer than the cards inside it. The usual failure point is a lost wallet rather than a worn out one.
