Two things stand out. The iPhone is 35 g heavier, which you notice in a shirt pocket. And the iPhone has magnets built in for MagSafe accessories, while Samsung chose to leave them out of the S26 series and support Qi2 through cases instead, citing thinner and lighter designs. If you already own magnetic chargers and mounts, that difference matters more than any spec in the table.
Battery and charging
Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro Max at up to 45 hours of video playback; Samsung rates the S26 Ultra at up to 31 hours. The two companies test differently, so treat that as a rough guide rather than a head-to-head result. On wired charging, Samsung quotes up to 60W and about 75% in 30 minutes on the Ultra. Both phones handle a full day of heavy use, and both reward you for turning on a charge limit if you keep the phone for years.
Which is better for software and updates?
iOS: one design, fewer settings, long support in practice
iOS works the same on every iPhone, and Apple controls the hardware and software together. Apple's formal commitment, filed under UK product security rules, is a minimum of five years of security updates from the date a model is first sold. In practice Apple has gone further: iOS 27 still installs on the iPhone 11 series from 2019.
Android with One UI: more control and a longer written promise
Samsung's One UI lets you change far more: the side button, lock screen layout, Modes and Routines that switch settings automatically, split-screen apps, and Edge panels. Samsung's written policy for the S26 series is seven Android upgrades and seven years of security patches, which is longer on paper than Apple's minimum. Which has the better camera?
Both shoot excellent photos, so the useful question is what you photograph. Samsung's hardware leans toward reach: a 200 MP main sensor and a 50 MP 5x telephoto, with digital zoom up to 100x. That makes the S26 Ultra the stronger choice for concerts, wildlife and sports from the stands.
Apple's iPhone 18 Pro Max uses three 48 MP-class cameras and adds a variable aperture on the main lens (f/1.48 to f/4.0), which gives more control over depth of field. Apple quotes a 16x optical-quality zoom range across its lenses. If most of your photos are of people indoors, both will serve you well; if you shoot far-away subjects, the Ultra's 5x lens has the edge.
How much does the ecosystem matter?
More than most comparisons admit. If you wear an Apple Watch, the decision is mostly made: Apple's setup guide states that Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 need an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27. iMessage, FaceTime, AirDrop to a Mac, and iCloud photo sync also work best inside Apple's world.
Samsung has closed some of that gap. On the Galaxy S26 series, Quick Share can now send files to iPhones, iPads and Macs over AirDrop, as long as the Apple device sets AirDrop to "Everyone for 10 minutes." Sizes and prices
Both brands sell far more than two phones. Apple's current lineup, from its compare page, runs from the 6.1-inch iPhone 16 and iPhone 17e through the 6.3-inch iPhone 17, the 6.5-inch iPhone Air, and the 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple's first foldable, iPhone Duo, opens to a 7.6-inch screen and goes on sale October 23, 2026.
Samsung's S26 and S26+ start at $899.99 with 6.3-inch and 6.7-inch screens, and its Galaxy Z Flip 8 starts at $1,199.99 with a 6.9-inch main screen that folds to pocket size. Resale value
The old rule that iPhones always resell for much more is weaker than it was. A 2025 SellCell analysis, reported by SamMobile, found the iPhone 16 had lost 53.4% of its value five months after launch, while the Galaxy S25 had lost 46.6% over the same period. iPhones still tended to fetch higher absolute prices on the used market, but the gap was narrowing.
The practical advice is the same for both: keep the box, keep the phone in a case from day one, and protect the screen. A clean phone with unscratched glass and corners is worth more at trade-in than a scuffed one, whichever logo is on the back.
What about cases and accessories?
On iPhone, MagSafe gives accessory makers one magnetic standard to build around, which is why so many chargers, mounts and wallets snap straight on. Samsung buyers have plenty of choice too, though the Ultra's S Pen silo and large camera module mean you should buy cases made for that exact model.
