Why put AirPods in a leather case?

The AirPods charging case is glossy white plastic, and it lives in pockets with keys and coins. Within weeks it picks up scuffs, and the hinge side takes a knock every time it falls off a desk. A fitted leather cover takes those hits for it.

Leather, silicone or hard plastic?

Silicone sleeves are cheap and soft, but they stretch over time, pick up pocket lint and turn grubby. Hard plastic shells protect well but scratch just like the case they cover, and they add a clicky, slippery layer. A full-grain leather cover sits in between. It cushions small knocks, wipes clean with a dry cloth, and the surface darkens with wear. Can you charge AirPods wirelessly with a leather case on?

Apple's instructions for wireless charging are simple. Place the case on a Qi-certified charging mat with the status light facing up and the lid closed (Apple Support: Charge your AirPods). Apple does not publish guidance on third-party covers for the AirPods case. For iPhone, Apple says a thick case can slow or stop wireless charging and suggests removing it if charging stalls.

So the practical rule is to check fit and check charging. Put the covered case on your charger and watch the status light. If it charges normally, leave the cover on. If it is slow or does not start, slide the cover off for charging. A wired USB-C or Lightning cable is not affected by the cover, as long as the port opening lines up with your case.

Leather AirTag case: keys, bags and luggage

An AirTag on its own has no loop, so it needs a holder to attach to anything. The Leather Case for Apple AirTag ($19.90) wraps the tag in full-grain leather with a ring for keys, a bag strap or a suitcase handle.

The case was made for the original 2021 AirTag. Apple lists the original at 31.9 mm across and 8.0 mm high, and lists the second-generation AirTag from 2026 at the same 31.9 mm and 8.0 mm, with a weight of 11.8 g against 11 g. Both run on a user-replaceable CR2032 coin cell, so you take the tag out of its case to swap the battery. How to care for a leather AirPods cover

An AirPods cover gets handled several times a day, so it builds patina fast and picks up hand oils. Wipe the cover with a soft, dry cotton cloth when it looks dull. Keep it out of direct sun and off hot car dashboards, and do not use liquid cleaners or water. If the leather feels dry after a few months, rub in a very thin, even layer of almond oil, let it sit, and buff off the excess. Will the leather change color?

Yes. Full-grain leather darkens where it is handled most, usually around the lid and the edges. Antique Brown and lighter shades show this sooner than black.
